When in Cape Town do what the Capetonians do: wine tasting and sight seeing. And that’s exactly what we did, plus more.
One day we went for a drive into wine country and made a stop at Elgin Railway Market. Although not open for trade it was open to walk around and having been there before, we wanted to show Gavin and Lee, because we think it is just such a cool place.
From there we continued for one or two wine stops (naturally) at Iona and Elgin Vintners. Nothing like enjoying a nice selection of good wines under a sparkling blue sky surrounded by lush vineyards. We had a birthday to celebrate and what better way than enjoying a good bottle of wine!
To return home, we took the coastal drive via Kleinmond and had to make a stop at the penguin colony of Betty’s Bay at the Stony Point Nature Reserve. The penguins are so tame or used to the public they make themselves at home everywhere.
Unfortunately it was late in the afternoon and the boardwalk was closed, but luckily the penguin population is quite happy to waggle around the beaches, swim in the surf or hide under bushes and shrubs close to the parking area.
A rock dassie was stretched out onto a rock to catch the rays of the late afternoon sun.
When we eventually left, we heeded the signs that warn to check behind your car for stray penguins before you reverse.
